SFUSD encourages students to be in school every day and we are committed to keeping them safe and fostering learning. We recognize that there are times when students and their families may choose to participate in activities such as demonstrations or strikes outside of school during the regular school day. While we respect and support our students' rights to express their views, please note that participation in a demonstration, walkout or strike will not be counted as an excused absence.

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.

Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

Co-sponsors: the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University, TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers), the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and the Square and Circle Club.

The program meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from June 13th through August 3rd at 1453 Mission St in San Francisco's SOMA district. Participants will learn about the field of psychology and the various careers within the mental health field, including the path to becoming a therapist, psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist, etc. Delicious and diverse lunches (pupusas! Indian pizza!) are served everyday and a $600 stipend is provided upon program completion.

The program is run by RAMS, the nonprofit mental health agency that staffs the therapists in the Wellness Centers. It is in collaboration with the Mental Health Services Act, whose aim is to bring people from historically underrepresented backgrounds into the mental health field.
